Hostel and Boarding

What is the New Tradition?
Dunstan High School Hostel offers a proud thirty-year tradition of caring for boarding students. With significant investment in new buildings and facilities in recent years the hostel is fully modernised and able to provide for the changing needs of students as they progress through adolescence. Our really refreshing difference is the family-like feeling we create among staff and students – our environment of mutual respect and support is by far our most significant investment in our students.

Who is the Hostel for?
The “new tradition in boarding” is a very attractive opportunity for students and parents who want their new school, new life and new challenges to be: • Opportunity and Success focussed in a school where students “participate in extensive opportunities”, learn in a “settled, supportive environment,” are “motivated and engaged in learning” and “achieve favourably in NCEA compared to other schools of a similar type and decile rating” (Source: ERO, 2005)
-
Based in Central Otago for excellent climate and environment.
-
Safe, “Lacking in Hierarchy and …offering strong role models” (ERO 2005)
-
Equipped with modern facilities that promote privacy and independence.
Our students include:
-
Local young people who live just “beyond the bus stop” and want to access high quality academic and vocational programmes. Many of these students enjoy the best of both boarding school and life at home by taking up our 5 day option.
-
Students from our surrounding regions who have selected a boarding school for its unique family like qualities, safe environment and lack of hierarchy structures.
-
Students from around New Zealand who have selected Dunstan for the outstanding outdoor education programmes and leadership training for which we are nationally awarded and recognised.
-
International students who have selected a boarding school based on excellence of education coupled with a stunning natural environment and amazing recreation opportunities.
