Location
Impressive mountain ranges, rivers and lakes surround Alexandra, the commercial centre of the beautiful and thriving Central Otago region. Residents enjoy a very high quality of life with low crime figures, a “continental” climate with distinct seasonal recreational opportunities, low population density combined with the best features of vibrant, modern urban living. Gold was the initial attraction to this spectacularly beautiful region of New Zealand – but the new Gold has been found first in fruit crops such as apricots and cherries, then in wine and viticulture and of course – tourism!
Climate - Seasonal Information
Central Otago’s climate is the closest we have in New Zealand to a continental climate. Alexandra boasts the lowest rainfall in New Zealand along with hot dry summers and cold winters making for clearly defined seasons. In spring, fruit blossoms provide the dominant visual feature. During winter, (Minus 6 - 12 oC) hoarfrost and snow, combined with the clear light, are especially spectacular. Autumn/fall is characterised by the brilliance of the autumn foliage and settled sunny weather. Summer is typified by long hot days (25-34oC, daylight until 10pm), low rainfall along with low wind levels and humidity.
Population Information
Central Otago enjoys a low population density combined with vibrant and growing population centres based around tourism, horticulture (apricots, apples, cherries etc...) and viticulture. This contributes to a very high quality of life for residents who enjoy all the normal opportunities of similarly sized towns in New Zealand but who also enjoy the wide open space, uncrowded roads and safe, clean urban living.
