NZSS Girls Football Tournament

It was really awesome to be able to go to a sports tournament this year, and heading to Dunedin was pretty exciting. Our team was made up of a group of girls - year 9 to 13, who had all been playing the season together in a local competition, and while we had a couple of players who had commitments to other tournament teams, we still had our core 14 travelling on the Sunday. So with a team of new and old players our girls headed away to compete in the NZSS Girls Football Lotto Sportswear tournament. With two tough games on the first day we landed ourselves 2nd lowest in our pool, which we were OK with because we had played really well, and one of the teams went through to play off for first and second. On the second day we were able to get some points on the board with a draw against Mountain View (and a magnificent goal by Peyton Robertson). Day 3 saw us with injuries but despite the injured players and no subs, we played 3 games with the results being a draw and two wins (our captain Nika Casbolt scoring pretty awesome goals from the left). This was an awesome way to end the tournament and for a number of us, play our final games of football for the school. We ended up placing a very respectable 17th overall which included some highlights such as with Charlize Thomson (our brilliant goalie) holding strong in the goal during a penalty shoot out! She was our tournament MVP because of the numerous goals she saved and we are all super proud of her. To be honest, everyone played their hearts out over the week and we couldn’t have asked for more. We came home battered and bruised, but super happy with our time away. A very big thank you to wonderful manager, Mrs Barnett and our amazing coach, Ms Hayes for all their hard work with organising and looking after us while on tournament and throughout the season. Your enthusiasm and commitment to our team needs to be recognised.
