Community Health Update: Scabies Awareness and Prevention

We have been made aware of cases of scabies within our community.

We are sharing this information so families can be aware of the signs and symptoms and seek advice if needed.

Scabies is a common skin condition caused by tiny mites. It spreads through close skin-to- skin contact and sometimes through shared bedding, clothing, or towels. Common symptoms include an itchy rash, often worse at night.

If you think your child may have scabies, please seek advice from your healthcare provider or pharmacist. Treatment is available and is usually effective when used correctly by all affected household members.

According to Ministry of Education guidance, children with scabies should be excluded from school until 24 hours after their first treatment has been completed.

For further information, please see: Ministry of Education – Schedule 1: Infectious Diseases and KidsHealth NZ – Scabies in Children

Thank you for your support in helping to keep our community healthy.
