From the 14th to the 18th of January 2024 I had the opportunity to attend WiE CAN, which is a course for young women going into year 13, run by the University of Canterbury.

I was able to immerse myself in university life whilst discovering the many disciplines and fields in engineering. I learnt many new things including how versatile the degree is, and the many options in which you can specialise, such as aerospace (which involves designing and making rockets). I really enjoyed the hands-on practical experience this course provided.

My favourite workshops were Electrical and Computer Engineering, where we optimised the performance of a solar-powered vehicle, and Mechanical Engineering where we made a small version of a Len Lye sculpture and looked at the mechanicals of motion.

I would definitely recommend this course to others as it's such an amazing, hands-on experience, you meet people from across Aotearoa while learning about the world of Engineering!
